Introduction
My name is Mulindwa Collins, a sign language teacher and interpreter. I have been working with BDI. for the years I’ve been in the deaf community. I find it so interesting seeing our kids evolve over time by attending our school. When they first join our school they come with no language and no way to communicate. Over time they progress to a point when they’re out of our school for Higher Education. Our alumni even have good grades and become competent citizens!
Providing education to our students has proven that even the Deaf can live and learn just like the hearing people do. Many are categorized as kasiru, “stupid”, but according to my research, it is not the case for they’re better than even those who call them kasiru. Through the process at BDI we’ve attained good results in the different Years of National examinations sittings. At BDI we’re aiming high at providing education to the deaf kids of this nation and world at large. For we ARE able to rise above adversity through education!
Challenges that we face at BDI.
– Some kids at times may not know sign language though they enroll when they are older. This makes it harder to catch up.
– Time is so costly! So much time is spent in writing every text on the board for the kids to be able to understand what the teacher teaches in a limited time. This makes the curriculum coverage slow.
– Making of captions on everything to tackle in class.
– Change of speaking style by the teacher such that some kids are able to follow through lip – reading.
Good highlights of working at BDI.
– I have been able to improve on my signing skills each day at BDI.
– Showing Christ to our kids through everything they do is a HUGE part of what we do.
– Producing competitive kids in the field of education to higher education institutions like vocations and secondary schools is very satisfying.
– Seeing kids improve on their lifestyle since most of them join us at an older age. However, in the process, they adopt and comply.
– Working as a team has boosted our confidence as Teachers.
